Positive Impact
Greetings October 2007

Welcome to “Positive Energy – Your Workplace Connection!”

With over 25 years of experience in successfully managing employees and operating profitable businesses, I am happy to share with you what I have learned along the way.

Each month, I’ll share some tips and information that will “turn up your dimmer switch” and help you to improve workplace effectiveness and results.

Three big questions

I’d like to start today by asking three big questions:
1.  What business are you in?
2.  What really drives your employees?
3.  Who’s really driving your business?

Did you answer questions #1 with the product or service you provide?  Did you answer question #2 with the word “money?”  Did you answer question #3 with either your name or those of your upper management?  If you did, you are not alone!

In today’s global workplace, many employees are being stretched to the max! (You may be one of them.)  They are doing more with less, leaving them feeling stressed, overwhelmed and disengaged – burned out – leading to lower productivity, internal/external customer service issues, and turnover, all of which impacts bottom-line results. Did you know it costs about 250% of salary (recruiting, training, operational issues) each time an employee turns over?

I work with many “for-profit” and “not-for-profit” businesses and organizations who understand that we are all in the “people” business and how important it is to strengthen the skills of those who are really running their business – the employees

The partnership between managers and employees has a great impact on the workplace environment.  When the manager/supervisor’s attitude sets a negative tone and creates an environment that is negative and toxic, employees tend to be negative, feel under-developed, disengaged, de-motivated, unproductive, and deliver poor customer service.  Employee morale is low, turnover is high and business results suffer!

When the attitude, tone and environment are positive and supportive, employees tend to be more positive, feel they are being developed, are engaged, productive, motivated and deliver WOW customer service!  Employee morale is high, turnover is low! When WOW service is delivered, customers return, refer others and, voila! Personal, professional, and business results improve!

As a manager/supervisor, what is the single most important thing you want your employees to do each day to improve your business?  Come to work!

As an employee, what is the single most important thing you can do to advance your career and job performance?  Go to work!

So, doesn’t it make sense that we, as employees at all levels of organizations, understand that the workplace environment really drives employees?  Isn’t it commonsensical that we understand the role we play and really see the connection between the workplace environment and business results?

No matter what the industry or business sector, “Positive Workplaces” are built on successful people-to-people relationships.  The message is a simple one, yet difficult for organizations to implement and manage.

The journey is on-going!  The need for leadership and professional development is a continuous process and critical to attracting and retaining the best talent, reducing turnover, and achieving bottom-line results in all organizations.  The road to results is through the employees – that’s all of us!  Let’s begin today by doing what we can, one at a time, to create a more positive workplace!
