The Equation for Success:

EM + E2 + EC = PO + PW

When you attend any of my programs, you will hear me ask, “How many of you liked algebra when you were in school?” With wonder, some participants eagerly raise their hands, while others groan at the thought, thinking, “What does algebra have to do with our business and our workplace?” You may be thinking the same thing…
Over the years, I’ve developed this simple equation that, in my opinion, represents the “Equation for Success” that works for all types of organizations.

EM + E2 + EC = PO + PW

The partnership between managers and employees has a great impact on the workplace environment. When the manager/supervisor’s attitude sets a negative tone and creates an environment that is negative and toxic, employees tend to be negative, feel under-developed, disengaged, de-motivated, unproductive, and deliver poor customer service. Employee morale is low, turnover is high and business results suffer!

It’s all about employee performance – from the top down – driving business results!

What about your workplace?

  • What is your organization’s performance standard?
  • What is your personal performance standard?
  • How would your (internal and external) customers rate your personal and organizational performance?
  • How is the environment impacting you and your employees?
  • If you are a “people manager,” how does your personal performance standard affect your employees and, ultimately, the results of the organization?

Research has proven…Leaders of successful, profitable organizations understand that reducing turnover and improving results begins with taking a good, hard look at where “the rubber meets the road” – at the people who are managing/supervising their employees.

They are asking some difficult questions of themselves and of those that report to them:

  • Who’s managing/supervising the day-to-day operations?
  • Is this the right person for the job today?
  • What is the turnover in their area?
  • What is the workplace environment like in their area?
  • What are the managers/supervisors doing or not doing to help their employees improve productivity and business results?
  • How is employee performance managed? Is 99% good enough?
  • How are employees trained either formally or on-the-job by managers/supervisors to perform their jobs effectively?
  • How effective are the current employee training and development programs?

So, have you figured out how to translate the equation? It’s all about the people-to-people connections that are really driving results…

EM (Effective Managers) + E2 (Engaged Employees) + EC (Engaged Customers) =
PO (Profitable Organization) + PW (Positive Workplace)
